Powering Progress: Northern Ireland’s 2025 Energy Strategy Action Plan Unveiled

Northern Ireland's Department for the Economy has unveiled the Energy Strategy Action Plan 2025, outlining 19 key actions designed to advance the region's transition to secure, affordable, and clean energy. This initiative underscores a commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in renewable energy and meeting decarbonisation targets.

Key actions include:

  • Renewable Electricity Support Scheme: Launching a consultation to facilitate the first auction in 2026.
  • Low Carbon Heat and Energy Efficiency: Designing support schemes for residential buildings.
  • Smart Meter Implementation: Developing a plan to support the goal of 80% renewable electricity by 2030.
  • Community Energy Projects: Adopting an all-of-government approach to deliver local benefits through community energy initiatives.

Economy Minister Dr. Caoimhe Archibald emphasised the importance of accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels, highlighting the economic opportunities and the necessity of a collective effort across government, the energy sector, businesses, and academia.

Alongside the 2025 Action Plan, the Energy Strategy Action Plan Report 2024 has been published, providing updates on progress made against the objectives set for the previous year.

These publications mark significant steps towards Northern Ireland's goal of net-zero energy, reflecting a proactive approach to energy policy and climate action.
