The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) drives ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling organisations to set science-based emissions reduction targets.
Science-based targets provide a clearly defined pathway for companies and financial institutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, helping prevent the worst impacts of climate change and future-proof business growth. Targets are considered ‘science-based’ if they are in line with what the latest climate science deems necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. A company can submit their targets for validation, the relevant forms must be filled; near-term target submission form, near-term submission for financial institutions and the net-zero target submission form. The SBTi has outlined that a 4.2% year on year reduction of your Scope 1 emissions is in line with science-based targets. Targets to actively source renewable electricity at a rate that is consistent with 1.5°C scenarios are an acceptable alternative to scope 2 emission reduction targets. The SBTi has identified 80% renewable electricity procurement by 2025 and 100% by 2030 as thresholds (portion of renewable electricity over total electricity use) for this approach. With Scope 3 as the biggest contributor to your carbon footprint, the SBTi has outlined that 80% engagement of your supply chain must be accounted for by 2025.
